Many of our guests come to Apalachicola for the birds. Their first encounter on arrival is
apt to be a cheery "Hello" when they arrive from
Einstein
In our garden you will find dove, cedar waxwing, our family of cardinals, hummingbirds, and the resident jay.
During the summer months,
the old causeway to St George Island is covered with birds who hatch their
eggs on the pebbles along the old roadway--Oyster Catchers and Skimmers. Along the causeway
leading from EastPoint to Apalachicola, look for osprey nests on the power poles. Pelicans
crashing into the water for their fresh fish are the norm.
Back in the waters along the Apalachicola river and in the national forest
that borders it, you can find angilla, coot, osprey, and if you're
lucky a bald eagle or two. Locals offer canoe and boat charters back into
the swamp known as Tate's Hell or, if you are daring enough, rent the canoe
or kayak and venture out on your own. For the best tour in the area, we highly recommend
Capt Gibby's Eco Tours.
There are a great many opportunities for bird watching in the area, whether through
and organized festival such as the Florida Panhandle
Birding and Wildflower Festival , or venture out on your own out to
St George island.
